Touchdown Calzones

Touchdown Calzones are a delicious, handheld Italian treat filled with savory cheeses, pepperoni, and spices—perfect for game day or any casual gathering. These baked calzones offer a crispy crust with a flavorful, melty interior.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup pizza sauce (plus extra for dipping)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Divide dough into 4 equal parts. Roll each portion into a 7-inch circle.
  6. Spread a couple of tablespoons of pizza sauce on one half of each dough circle, leaving a border.
  7. Layer with mozzarella, ricotta, pepperoni, Parmesan, oregano, and garlic powder.
  8. Fold the dough over the filling and press edges firmly to seal. Crimp the edges decoratively and cut a small slit on top to vent.
  9. Brush each calzone with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  10. Bake for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  11. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes before serving with extra pizza sauce.

Notes

For an extra crispy crust, brush the calzones with olive oil before baking. You can also customize fillings with mushrooms, bell peppers, or sausage to suit your taste.
