Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm milk, vanilla extract, sugar, and salt.
  2. Gradually add flour and knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rise for 4-6 hours until doubled in size.
  3. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface.
  4. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough.
  5. Sprinkle chocolate chips across the buttered dough.
  6. Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into 12 equal pieces.
  7. Place each piece into a muffin tin lined with paper cups or greased.
  8. Cover and let rise for another 1-2 hours until puffy.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops with beaten egg.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
  11. Allow to cool slightly before removing from the tin. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve.

Notes

For an extra indulgent treat, serve warm with a drizzle of chocolate sauce or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
