Celebrate game day with these fun and festive Basketball Sugar Cookies, featuring soft, buttery dough decorated with vibrant orange and black icing to resemble basketballs.

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • Orange royal icing
  • Black royal icing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, if using.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients, alternating with milk until the dough comes together.
  6. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place on baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your hand.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Allow cookies to cool completely on wire racks before decorating.
  10. Use orange royal icing to cover the surface of each cookie. Once dry, pipe black royal icing lines to create the basketball pattern.
  11. Let the icing set completely before serving or storing.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend, and let the icing dry thoroughly to avoid smudging during transport.
